VersaTurtle! Recently revised and simplified, one of my very best blocks is now easier than ever! I simply love this graceful yet playful sea turtle and its versatile possibilities for quilts, pillows and table runners. Learn new methods and create a uniquely charming table runner or begin a lap quilt in class. I’ll walk you through the construction process (at a gentle turtle’s pace) introducing my “smarter” techniques for piecing the shell and legs. The head and shell centers can be appliquéd by hand or machine and I’ll show you several options for eyes. The fins and background pieces offer wonderful opportunities to showcase your quilting skills and I’ll present different options.

This class is suggested for students with intermediate and beyond skill levels Karen Brow-Meier is the designer and teacher for Java House Quilts, and lectures, shows and teaches at guilds and conferences in California and throughout the US.

About the Teacher: Karen Brow-Meier As a pattern designer for over 20 years, I specialize in animal themes with both pieced and appliquéd blocks. My quilts are unique, lively and happy with a subtle sense of humor. I create animals with personality over realism and have patterns for both individual & BOM quilts as well as novelty projects. My work has appeared in national magazines, books, calendars and catalogues, and at AQS, Quilt market, Quilt Festival, Pacific international and Road To California shows. Currently, I am working on a second line of fabrics with Hoffman California with whom I regularly collaborate for quilt models and new designs. I teach the concept of color balance (makes a quilt “sing!”) rather than color wheel theory. This is a less mathematical and a more accessible way for many of us to think about fabric colors. I also teach ways to create dramatic movement with images running over, under and through blocks and borders. I believe in using the right pieces instead of the most pieces when it comes to appliqué and creating designs with inventive construction and surprises which enhance the beauty of our work.

About Karen Brow-Meier
Designer & Teacher for Java House Quilts

Quilting Philosophy:
A palate of bright pastels speaks to my southern California surroundings and I work towards that point in fabric selection when the colors will just “SING” in their own harmony of light and dark and of warm and cool.

Incorporating appliqué animals against pieced blocks and borders, creates interest, movement and that touch of humor we can all enjoy. I’m a believer in the right pieces versus the most pieces when it comes to appliqué and strive for a compositional balance of intricate work and restful spaces for the most dramatic visual effect.

I will often utilize unique construction techniques to create works that play with the idea that a quilt is not necessarily four-sided or two-dimensional in nature.

Education & Work:
With a BA from Michigan State University, I have worked as a professional graphic designer, cartoon illustrator and Communications Specialist for the MSU College of Agriculture before quilting “arrested” me in 1995.  In 1996 I began authoring patterns under the name of “Java House Quilts”  and have over 60 designs in print.

Teaching:
I have been teaching and lecturing for ten years in California, the mid-west,   and on cruise ships. I offer workshops to guilds and conferences and & work enthusiastically to make classes both informative and enjoyable, with one-on-one attention & encouragement for students of all skill levels.
